Молитвенная просьба Тэда Вильсона, президента Генеральной Конференции Церкви АСД[:en]Urgent Report on Unusual Situation in Lome, Togo

[:en]Greetings, Church Leaders comprising GC ADCOM and division/attached union presidents, as I head back from a three week trip to Russia (ESD YEC), Belarus, Cote d’Ivoire (WAD YEC), Ghana, Liberia, and Togo.  It was a privilege to travel with the ESD and WAD officers in each division.  The wonderful reception from our church members reminds us clearly about how much of a world family in Christ we really are.  Much could be said about the trip and various positive church meetings as well as meetings with government officials.  However, in addition to certain burdens that I carry on my heart, there is a particularly heavy one I wish to share with you so that you can bear it as well, share it with the world church and unburden yourself to the Lord in prayer.  It is the delicate and challenging burden for our two church members, one a pastor and the other a strong local church member, in Lome, Togo, who have suffered for the last eight months and three days languishing in prison since March 15, 2012 after having been falsely accused and arrested.  As I fly home in freedom I cannot forget these precious brothers, their wives and their families.  Let me tell you about the situation.

While in Lome, we have been trying to bring freedom to Pastor Antonio Montiero and brother Bruno Amah.  Pastor Montiero is from the Cape Verde Islands and is working with the Sahel Union of Seventh-day Adventists as a department director based in Lome.  Bruno Amah is a strong Seventh-day Adventist church member and businessman in Lome.  Much has been done in meeting with officials and other activities by the Togo Mission, the Sahel Union, the West-Central Africa Division, the GC PARL Department and GC administration to bring this situation to a successful conclusion.  However, they remain in prison.  We visited them in the prison on Friday, Nov 16, and had a good, encouraging meeting with them.  We prayed with them and with prisoners in the prison.  Many weeks ago knowing that I would be in Togo, our church leaders based in Togo had asked for an audience with the head of state to plead our case for these innocent men who have been falsely accused and have been in prison since March 15, 2012, as I have indicated.  I want you to remember that date and the accumulating days from that date.  Every day is one day too long to be in that prison.  In response to our church’s request to plead our case, the government indicated that the protocol to follow in this case was through the president of the republic’s office.  Prior to my arrival in Togo, the president’s protocol office indicated that the moment I arrived in Togo to let them know so that an appointment could be made.  The presidents protocol office was notified upon my arrival early Friday morning, Nov 16, with the three officers of the West-Central Africa Division and others.  The protocol office indicated that they would see what could be worked out.  During that Friday, repeated calls were made by our church leaders to find out what the visitation schedule to the president would be.  However, the government did not respond to at least assign some other government officer to see us and it would appear that the government does not have interest in releasing Pastor Antonio Montiero and Bruno Amah.  Very unfortunately, we were not received by any high ranking authorities.  We must now take this situation to the Lord and to our church members for world wide prayer.  We have been praying in our administrative groups for this situation and most of you are aware of this developing problem.  However, now we are asking that we initiate a strong worldwide prayer initiative petitioning the Lord to do something unusual.  Please join us in earnestly praying for a miracle of God to happen.  Let many others know of this case and ask them to pray and do whatever they can.  Whatever God’s will is in this situation is what we want.  Different levels of the church including the General Conference will be doing what we can through various channels to assist in the liberation of these men.  There is no evidence against them and almost everyone acknowledges that they should be freed.  They were arrested on completely false charges which have nothing to do with them.  When we met them, they gave tremendous testimonies as to how God has a work for them in the prison and how they are working to help people there.  God has His timetable for when they are released and they feel that God has a work for them to do while they are there.  They are reading their Bibles, praying, singing, counseling others, studying with others, witnessing for the Lord, bringing peace into the prison and standing like “modern-day Josephs in jail” in very difficult conditions.  They indicated that the prisoners have said that since they have come into the prison, the prisoners don’t fight as much anymore.  With interesting humor, the prisoners say Pastor Montiero and brother Bruno should leave so they can fight again! Although we do not want the other prisoners to fight, we very much want Pastor Montiero and Bruno to leave the prison immediately and ask that you earnestly pray with us and thousands of Seventh-day Adventist members and friends of Seventh-day Adventists that God will open the prison doors for Pastor Montiero and brother Bruno as He did for Joseph, Paul, Peter and others.  It is not an easy situation and we ask for every assistance possible through every appropriate means available to assist in the immediate release of these innocent men.  For those who have ideas and suggestions, I ask that you share these with Orville Parchment who can be in contact with me, our PARL leaders, our Communication Department, our West-Central Africa Division/Sahel Union leaders and others.   Both Friday night, Nov 16 (at a church meeting), and Saturday night, Nov 17 (at the Montiero home), we met the Montiero family to encourage them and pray with them.  Pastor Montiero’s wife and Bruno Amah’s wife go to the prison everyday to see their husbands and bring food to them.  Needless to say, the families are devastated but yet are of strong courage in the Lord that He will work out the arrangements for bringing freedom to Pastor Montiero and Bruno Amah.  The Seventh-day Adventist Church conducts prison ministries in that prison with various church members and church leaders preaching, studying and praying with prisoners.  A baptistry has even been constructed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the prison.  Additional assistance is being given for this special prison ministry in the very prison where our innocent church pastor and member are being held without evidence.  We earnestly plead with you to pray for their immediate release and keep this plea before the Lord until they obtain their rightful freedom.  The West-Central Africa Division, Sahel Union, Togo Mission leaders all appeal for as much help from the world field as possible.  There are various things that the division and union will do.  There are more things that the General Conference will do working through various channels and activities.  However, I am asking that at the GC ADCOM on Tuesday (and if the ADCOM has been cancelled please notify all member that we will be having a meeting) that we vote an international day of prayer and fasting for the release of Pastor Antonio Montiero and Bruno Amah.  The date for that day of prayer should be in early December.  We will discuss the exact date and will use every means of electronic distribution for this most important cause.  We will see how the new “social media” can get the news to as many Seventh-day Adventist members and others within approximately one week.  God is all powerful and we need to ask, according to His will, for His supernatural intervention for the release of our two brothers.  The GC Secretariat and GC Communication Department will alert you to the particulars in this situation after the vote has been taken for this special day of fasting and prayer.

Adventist Church President Ted N. C. Wilson
