Более пятидесяти служителей-ветеранов – супружеские пары и овдовевшие – собрались на встречу, организованную администрацией Западно-Российского союза Церкви христиан адвентистов седьмого дня в подмосковном доме отдыха «Бекасово» 5-8 сентября.
Люди и времена могут меняться, а «Иисус Христос вчера и сегодня и вовеки Тот же». Эти слова из письма Апостола Павла Евреям (13:8) стали девизом встречи не случайно.
Общаясь с ветеранами, я поняла, что адвентисты советского времени и новой России 1990-х 2000-х заметно отличаются друг от друга. Принять крещение в церкви адвентистов в сталинские и хрущевские времена было героизмом. Тот, кто принимал Христа, сознательно отделялся от мира, лишаясь многих преимуществ мира, например, их отлучали от образования, потому что боялись их влияния на молодежь. Верующих лишали родительских прав, так как их дети не посещали школу по субботам. А они упорно учились, их главным и подчас единственным учебником была Библия. И — смотрите! — они не прогадали. Их жизнь полна чудес Божьих и благословений. Да, возможности для проповеди тогда были ограничены личным свидетельством, но многие люди отваживались принять крещение и последовать за Христом именно потому, что верующие вдохновляли их своей жизнью, своим примером. А трудности испытывали и закаляли их характер.
Церковь существовала в те годы подпольно, либо полулегально. Служители церкви должны были работать на производстве, чтобы их не обвинили в тунеядстве. Церковные советы проводили по ночам, жены служителей, зашторив окна, перепечатывали на пишущей машинке книги и пособия для изучения Библии. Приходилось соблюдать конспирацию, чтобы не заметили соседи, среди них мог оказаться стукач. Ведь хранить, тиражировать и распространять религиозную литературу было запрещено.
Сегодня в России верующих практически не преследуют, свобода совести открывает перед миссионерами широкие возможности. Но время свободы таит и опасности нешуточные. Отсутствие препятствий расслабляет, может вогнать в лаодикийский сон, а общение с миром — размыть христианские ценности. Поэтому церкви эпохи свободы так необходим опыт и совет ветеранов, которые следовали за Христом в неблагоприятных обстоятельствах, чтобы Божий народ мог подготовиться к последним гонениям, о которых предсказывают библейские пророки.
Ветераны съехались со всех концов России и даже изза рубежа. Приглашенных было вдвое больше — кого-то не отпустили в дальний путь болезни, кого-то дела. Да, дела, служение! Пастыри не бывают бывшими, преклонный возраст не повод уходить на покой и не помеха тому, кто от юности избрал служение Богу и людям. Они ведут классы субботней школы и молитвенные кружки, помогают в капелланском служении, пишут книжки воспоминаний.
Правда некоторые жалуются, что их опыт сегодня в церкви остается невостребованным. Об этом я узнала из анкет, которые предложено было заполнить ветеранам. Анкеты пригодились для диалога ветеранов с действующими пасторами церкви. Это был полезный для обоих сторон разговор, обмен оптом, взглядами, идеями, как приготовить Церковь Божью к славному Второму пришествию Христа.
В анкетах ветераны поделились своими переживаниями о том, как развивается Церковь сегодня, сравнивают особенности Церкви современной и той, старой, где им дове лось служить. Они желают новому поколению служителей «полагаться на силу Христа, а не человеческую».
Молодость ветеранов пришлась на сталинскую эпоху, они пережили гонения за веру, многие побывали в тюрьмах. Своей верностью, мужеством, чистотой и добротой они привлекали к Богу людей, которые их окружали. Но на вопрос «О чем вы жалеете?» многие ответили так: «Жалею, что не все сделал, что мог бы сделать». На трудности они не сетуют, а благодарят за них Бога, потому что «трудности открывают путь для благословений неба»!
Несколько раз в день ветераны, преодолевая одышку и боль в ногах, без ропота поднимались на третий этаж, где находился актовый зал. Приятно было смотреть на них: подтянутые, пунктуальные, радостные. Интересно было слушать этих умудренных жизненным опытом людей, каждая судьба – сюжет для драматической истории, и непременно с хорошим концом. У них не только хочется просить совета, но и следовать ему. Рядом с ними чувствуешь себя надежно.
Что делают обычные пенсионеры, когда собираются вместе? Разговаривают о болезнях и политике. Но это не о сестре Валентине, вдове пастора. Говорить о болезнях, по ее мнению, только утверждать их, а ведь хочется выздороветь! И политика ее не очень интересует. «Когда столько лет изучаешь пророчества Библии, то знаешь, что будет. Главное самому не сбиться с Божьего пути». Валентина по вечерам пела вместе со своей соседкой по комнате. У них получился отличный дуэт, украсивший собой субботнее богослужение. А еще на богослужении в субботу выступил хор ветеранов. Им понадобилась всего одна репетиция, чтобы прекрасно исполнить на четыре голоса несколько старых добрых гимнов под управлением Льва Бондарчука, директора издательского отдела ЗРС. Говорят, их ночью разбуди — споют! И сыграют! Когда-то во многих общинах был не только свой хор, но и оркестр, который объединял молодежь и служил миссионерским целям.
Эта встреча и отдых в прекрасном месте была очень нужна ветеранам. Пожилые служители со слезами благодарили организаторов за радость общения со старыми товарищами по духовному поприщу, наслаждались размышлениями над Священным Писанием, трепетно внимали духовным наставлениям, от всего сердца молились, воодушевленно пели старые добрые гимны вместе с вокально-инструментальной группой «Новое имя» под руководством Петра Арбузова.
Эта встреча очень нужна и нам, новому поколению служителей, говорили пасторы администраторы Западно-Российского Союза. С ними был солидарен исполнительный секретарь ЕАД Владимир Крупский и президенты восьми конференций Западно-Российского Союза, которые приехали вместе с ветеранами.
Ветеранам вручили сумки с новыми книгами издательства «Источник жизни», женщинам нарядные павловские платки, мужчинам шарфики. Подарки со смыслом – ветеранам пожелали быть красивыми и здоровыми и продолжать развиваться.
О чем мечтают старые служители? «Живым встретить Христа», «увидеть ушедших на покой близких людей», «дни жизни, данные Богом, полностью отдать служению», «поддерживать молитвами детей и всех, кто трудится ради спасения людей». «О чем можно мечтать, когда тебе 80? Чтобы
наши дети и внуки жили достойно, храня Божьи истины. И чтобы наши имена были записаны на небесах».
Чего служители ветераны желают Церкви? «Вернуться к истокам адвентизма». А еще любви! «Наши проповеди будут иметь силу, только если мы будем иметь любовь. Мы не сможем приобретать души без любви Христа. Так говорит Дух пророчества».
More than fifty retired ministers (both family couples and widowed) got together for the meetings organized by the administration of West Russian Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Church at “Bekasovo” sanatorium in Moscow region on September 5-8.
Times and people can change, but ‘’Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Heb. 13:8). It is not a coincidence that these words of apostle Paul have become a motto of this meeting.
While talking to church veterans I understood that Adventists from Soviet times and those who became Adventists in modern Russian history (1990-2000) are significantly different. It was an act of heroism to be baptised in Seventh-day Adventist church in the times of Stalin or Khruschev. Those who accepted Christ, deliberately separated themselves from the world, losing many of the benefits of the world, they were excommunicated from education field, because the authorities were afraid of their influence on young people. Believers were deprived of parental rights, as their children did not attend school on Saturdays. And they studied hard, their main and sometimes the only textbook was the Bible. And – look! – They did not go wrong. Their life is full of God’s wonders and blessings. At that time opportunities for preaching were limited to personal witnessing, but many young people were brave to be baptised and to follow Christ precisely because believers have inspired them with their life and example. And the difficulties experienced and tempered their character.
That time the church existed in underground or semi-legally. Pastors had to work in the workplace, to avoid being accused of parasitism. Church councils were held at night, wives of ministers had to shutter the windows to re-print books and materials for Bible studies on a typewriter. They had to observe secrecy in order not to be noticed by neighbors, because among them could be a snitch. After all it was forbidden to store, replicate and distribute religious literature.
In modern Russia believers are almost not persecuted, freedom of conscience opens up opportunities for missionaries. But time of freedom is fraught with serious danger. Absence of obstacles relaxes, it may drive believers into the Laodicean sleep and communication with the world can erode Christian values. Therefore, the church living in the era of freedom needs the experience and advice of veterans who followed Christ in adverse circumstances, that God’s people could prepare for the final persecution predicted by the biblical prophets.
Veterans came from all corners of Russia and even from abroad. But the list of invitees was twice longer – some could not come because of sickness, some were busy. Yes, they were busy with ministry! Pastors never retire and their old age is not a reason for retirement and is not an obstacle for those who had chosen to serve God and people since their youth. They lead Sabbath School classes and prayer circles, help in chaplain ministry and write the books of memories.
It is true that some complain that their experience in the church today remains unclaimed. This is what I learned from the questionnaires, which the veteran were invited to fill out. Questionnaires were useful for dialogue of veterans with current pastors of the church. It was a useful talk for both sides, exchange of experience, views, ideas on how to prepare the Church of God for the glorious Second Coming of Christ.
In the questionnaires veterans shared their view on modern development of the Church , especially comparing to the Church of the old times, when they had the opportunity to serve. They want a new generation of ministers “to rely on the power of Christ, not human power”.
Youth of our veterans came in the Stalin era, they have experienced persecution for their faith, and many have been imprisoned. And by their loyalty, courage, purity and kindness they attracted people who surrounded them to God. Answering the question: “What do you feel sorry for?” many of them responded as follows: “I regret that I did not do everything I could do.” They did not complain on difficulties, but thanked God for them , because the ” difficulties open the way for heavenly blessings!”
Several times a day veterans were going up to the third floor where the assembly hall was without a murmur, overcoming shortness of breath and pain in the legs. It was nice to see them: well groomed, punctual and happy. It was interesting to listen to the experiences of these life wised people, destiny of each one of them could become a plot for dramatic stories and always with a happy end. You not only want to ask for advice, but also to follow it. Beside them one feels safe.
What do ordinary pensioners do when they get together? They talk about diseases and politics. But this is not true about sister Valentina, the widow of a pastor. She thinks that if you are talking about the disease you confirm that you are sick, but you want to get well! And she is not interested in politics. “When you study biblical prophecies for so many years you know what will happen. The most important thing is not to stray from God’s path.” In the evenings Valentina sang along with her roommate. They turned out to be a great duet and they decorated Sabbath worship service with singing. Choir of veterans sang during Sabbath worship too. They needed just one rehearsal to perform well on the four voices some good old hymns under direction of Lev Bondarchuk, Publishing ministries department director of West Russian Union. They say that if you wake them up at night they could sing and play easily! Long time ago many congregations had not only a choir, but the band that united youth and served to missionary purposes.
Our veterans really needed this meeting and stay in a beautiful place. With tears of joy older ministers thanked the organizers for fellowship with old friends, enjoyed reflections on Scripture, anxiously listened to the spiritual instructions, they prayed from the bottom of their hearts and enthusiastically sang the good old hymns together with vocal and instrumental group “New Name” under the direction of Peter Arbuzov.
Pastors and administrators from West Russian Union said that this meeting was very necessary for them too. ESD executive secretary Vladimir Krupskiy and the presidents of eight conferences of the West Russian Union who came together with the veterans agreed with them.
Church veterans received bags with newly published books from the Source of Life Publishing House, women got elegant shawls made in Pavlovsky Posad and men got scarves. These were the presents with a special message – wishing the veterans to be beautiful and healthy and to continue to develop.
What do the older ministers dream of? “To meet Christ while we are still alive, to see those who already passed away, to dedicate the days of our life given by God to ministry, to support our children and all those working to save people with their prayers”. “What can you dream about when you are 80 years old? – That our children and grandchildren would live with dignity, keeping God’s truth. And that our names would be written in heavenly books.”
What do retired ministers wish to the Church? “We want it to return to the roots of Adventism. And have love! Our sermons will be effective only if we have love. We cannot win souls without love of Christ, this is what the Spirit of Prophecy says”.
